We’re happy to invite you to MYRIADS #28! A special edition with three special acts, each pushing the limits of sounds and space in their own unique and personal way. New duo SKRTCH explore never-ending sonic heaviness of the most distressing kind. No Sugar No Candy is a performance by choreographers Haduch and Mavridou pursuing intensity using voice and silence as guides for physical expression. And Timeteo’s four channel sounds inhabit the place and nourish uncertainty. More info on the performances below.

Doors open at 20.30, performances start around 21:00
Entrance 5 euros, cheap drinks, all money goes to the artists
No pin — bring cash please!

SKRTCH is Christian Smith and Vlad V Vlaev, who make Drone Music of the most distressing kind. Constantly changing, yet not at all, and without any goal beyond never-ending sonic heaviness.  Vlad plays guitar and electronics. Christian plays percussion and electronics, and sometimes sings, but let’s hope not tonight. https://soundcloud.com/christian-s-smith/skrtch-christian-smith-vladimir-vlaev

“No Sugar No Candy” – Mavridou/ Haduch
A voice-dance duo by Maria Mavridou and Malgorzata Haduch who use both voice and silence as guides for physical expression. This show is personal till the pain of the bones, with the performers sharing with each other what would otherwise remain hidden forever. At times, No Sugar, No Candy is a broadcast of two different radio stations blaring simultaneously. And sometimes, the piece gets too intense — even scary to watch. All in the pursuit of fullness of expression, fullness of being together, fullness of life. And never stepping back.

Timoteo Carbone – Sounds In An Abandoned Space II
The core of this project comes from an abandoned space in Timoteo’s imagination and memory. In this area, cleaned of its past activities and importance, a series of apparition are reported. A series of sounds that interlope the surrounding silence, that inhabit the place just as weed and mold do. The performance investigates a state not capable of generating structural responses anymore, a situation after the demise of its last standing pillar. A being where there is finally space to nourish uncertainty. A four-channel performance for voice, viola, projections and soundtrack.

Helicopter resident DJ Manimal spins his personal favorites through a matrix of echo and loops in between sets.

Myriads #26: Daniel Llermaly & City Hands

MYRIADS and Helicopter invite you to a special Mid-Summer Music Night, where Chilean sound artist Daniel Llermaly immerses you in an other-worldly atmosphere of melting and dripping sounds, and Den Haag’s own City Hands unfolds his personal dreamy and psychedelic universe. A relaxed summer night, perfect if you’re spending your summer days in our lovely city and appreciate some fascinating performances and refreshing alcoholic(?) beverages.

On thursday, august 1
At Helicopter, Beatrijsstraat 10, in Den Haag
Enter through the blue gate opposite Cafe Elta
Entrance 5 euro, great selection of cheap drinks, all money goes to the artists
Cash only!

/// Daniel Llermaly hails from Chile, currently residing in Mexico. He is a versatile musician: sound artist, part of tropical psychedelic ensemble La Redada, giving workshops on “electronic lutherie” and the use of free technological tools, and active organizer of sonic events. For this night, he presents “Quelccaya”, a real-time composition based on field recordings of the world’s largest tropical glacier of the same name, in Perú. These recordings were made on various recording devices, from simple dictaphones and cassette recorders to top-notch hydrophones. These recordings are then augmented with self-built oscillators, synthesizers, filters and other processors. The result is a living sonic organism that fully immerses you in other-worldly atmospheres of melting and dripping sounds — while simultaneously inviting you to reflect on the effects of climate change in the communities living in the Andean zone.

/// City Hands is the long-running project of Manuel Padding, a musician, performance artist and visual artist from Den Haag. Padding uses an ever-shifting array of sound generators which keeps his music fresh and surprising. From tape collages and sound bowls to small simple electronics, self-constructed water drums or coconut shakers, where needed sprinkled with just the right amount of ghostly effects. With this he takes you to a highly personal, dreamy and psychelic universe where ancient creatures give a glimpse into their mind in a fascinating winding trip.

Fasten your senses – ArtScience B3 Exhibition + Myriads #25

May 31 // 17:00 ArtScience exhibition (free) – 20.30 Myriads concerts (3EUR, cheap beers, all money goes to the artists)

Helicopter, Beatrijsstraat 10 Den Haag (Enter through the blue gate opposite Cafe Elta)

We start off the program at 17:00 with ‘Fasten your Senses’, a one night showcase of crossings between visual, sonic and performance arts by ArtScience 3rd year students: “ArtScience bachelor 3rd year opens their intimate world of multi-sensorial exploration, pulling at tradition with varying pressure. To fasten means to make secure, but also to single out, to concentrate on. Let us be your guide in broadening the width of what you thought you could possibly perceive.” For more info on the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/351867719020611/

Followed at 20.30 hrs by the NOT TO BE MISSED concert program ‘Myriads’, organized by Arvind Ganga: “It’s been some six months since the last MYRIADS concert. That’s way too long indeed. So we’re ecstatic to say we’re back! And how. I can’t express how stoked I am with this line up. Tony Guarino returns to Helicopter and you know he always has something insane up his sleeve. Grzegorz Marciniak & Ábel Fazekas perform an intimate nocturnal sound composition for two melodicas. And then there is the scorching hot super trio of Chris Corsano, David Maranha and Richard Youngs to melt our little class room down. More info on the artists below. You cannot miss this. I repeat: you cannot miss this!

This concert is made possible with help of the municipality of Den Haag.

/////// Chris Corsano (US), David Maranha (PT) and Richard Youngs (UK)
A full on full frontal assault by three experimental superstars:

Chris Corsano has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990’s. He shouldn’t need an introduction, as he is widely regarded one of the most exciting, inventive, and prolific drummers around. His playing is dynamic and spontaneous, relentless, light and powerful at the same time. Always sensitive to what is happening around him, allowing the others full freedom while maintaining his own direction with maximum determination.

David Maranha is a multi-disciplinary artist from Portugal, combining sculpture, music and architecture. He’s active as a musician since the mid-eighties, working solo, in different bands, and improvising with others. His searing hot minimalist organ pieces seem quiet on the surface but are dangerous and unpredictable like a puddle of boiling lava.

Richard Youngs has been involved with music since the late eighties. He is classically trained in piano and guitar, but grew up with punk rock and its DIY ethic. A versatile musician, his work ranges from folk performances to work with orchestras, from a modern pop album to scores for the BBC or art and feature films, and from singing to being a drum machinist. His now famous quote “I went to a laptop concert and decided I was going to sing” gives a glimpse into his mind. Completely unpredictable, fearless and bonkers.

/////// Tony Guarino is a percussionist from NYC currently studying at the Institute of Sonology. His practice establishes contact with discarded and everyday objects— evoking ecstatic states of dissociative listening.

////// Grzegorz Marciniak & Ábel Fazekas
Marciniak and Fazekas study composition and ArtScience at the conservatory of Den Haag. They perform “Knots”, a sound composition for two melodicas written in summer / autumn 2018. The idea of the work was to write an ambient, intimate-like-music, intended to be performed in room-like spaces. The word Knots sounds like the Polish pronunciation of the word Noc (Night) and refers to the nocturnal atmosphere of the composition.
