MYRIADS 7 Horse Lords_ Bernstein _ Gardner, Svirsky, Vukosavljevic

11-02-16

Andrew Bernstein has one leg in ecstatic live ritual and the other in algorithmic composition. As a member of rock polymaths Horse Lords, Bernstein guides the band’s intricate arrangements through African-inspired percussion patterns, and intensifies their busy harmonic frameworks with torrents of cyclical saxophone melody. His solo music deals with themes of stasis, repetition, noise, and multiplicity. Combining intuitive improvised tactics, rule-based conditions, collages, and a wide range of extended techniques he creates a kind of opaque beauty where the smallest of shifts in tone and timbre again and again and again snowball into a voluptuous curtain wrapping itself around the ears. He collaborated with folks like Matmos, Dan Deacon, and his music is released by Hausu Mountain, Northern Spy, NNA Tapes, and Ehse Records.

Owen Gardner’s work in composition and improvisation is informed in equal measure by his involvement in Baltimore’s musical underground and by his study of Medieval European and certain non-Western musics, aiding in the development of an ever-widening sonic and emotional language. He works almost exclusively in Just Intonation, applied to cello and modified electric guitar. His music revolves around repetitive shifting patterns where overtones, noises, and percussive sounds weave an intricate web glowing with pure bliss.

Leo Svirsky is a composer, improviser, pianist and accordionist living in the Hague. His work explores how the instability of listening itself transforms the perception of musical semantics and affect. Disorientations of memory and spatial awareness are nevertheless bounded by a rootedness in song and story. While his background is in classical piano, he was drawn to contemporary music, improvisation and later composition. He has released works on Emanem, Slow Fidelity, and Ehse records (Songs in the Key of Survival).
